Taking on the Energy Burden

Inaugural Local Energy Market Alliance Conference

12 & 13 October 2023

LEANDER CLUB, HENLEY

Announcing the Local Energy Market Alliance

This event will bring together our growing community of leading specialists with others to build confidence and more momentum, and to consolidate the exciting work we have achieved so far. We will demonstrate the value the Alliance can bring, building on the initial Common Interest Group work to define pragmatic outputs, share development expenditure and minimise future transaction costs.

From experience, and as achieved at Leeds Castle, we believe that great value comes from the informal conversations stimulated by more structured discussions. This event is designed to facilitate both, all with a view to forming initial consortia that can commercialise Local Energy and start to expand this market.

Objectives

The local energy burden

The electrification of heating and transport and the maximization of roof-top solar are all initiatives that rely on action by multiple responsible parties, not least consumers. However, responsibility for delivering these elements of the energy transition is highly fragmented and leadership is sadly lacking with too many parties having bit roles. This is the local energy burden.

An industry initiative

Energy-smart places” holds the key as shown by Innovate UK’s £107m Prospering from the Energy Revolution (PfER) programme. Europe is also starting to look at District Self-Balancing, and several energy communities are appearing. As a result, organisations are realising that local systems have an important role to play in the current crisis and are looking for ways in which to do this. It is not a technical challenge: it is a business challenge.

This Alliance is about how business can take the initiative to create a market that will move consumers to mass adoption and generate major business opportunities.

Responding to demand

In May, at Leeds Castle, several leading businesses debated that whilst billions need to be spent on the grid edge updating homes, businesses, and the distribution infrastructure, little is being done formally. However, we also saw that much is being done on the ground; that momentum is building. Delegates agreed the need for further progress and recommended the forming of a business alliance to do this.

LEMA is the result.

Over the summer…

…we made a lot of very good progress structuring the Alliance, holding 2 Networks CIGS and developing the Dynamic Load Averaging service, part of the “Common Framework Agreements” that was resolutely backed by the Leeds Castle group.

At Henley…

…we anticipate presenting this, outlining what LEMA needs to do to develop the Property Developer and Customer Propositions, and to show the full work plan and output “Products” to support success. Also, ElectraLink has offered to demonstrate their advanced data mapping, data capabilities and insights and ability to provide consumption data.
